Definition: A literary art in which words are used creatively to express feeling. Poetry takes many shapes and forms; often rhythmic and with rhyming schemes, poetry also uses figurative language and imagery to entertain the reader. Basically, a poem is a novel encapsulated into stanzas.
Example:
| THE FOG comes | |
| on little cat feet. | |
| |
| It sits looking | |
| over harbor and city | |
| on silent haunches | |
| and then moves on |
—"The Fog," Carl Sandburg
Significance: Poetry is a means of expressing as much emotion in as little space possible. Like any kind of art form, poetry should be read, appreciated, enjoyed and studied.
